ANNANDALE – Elena Swale had a match-high 23 assists, while Brittany Connatser led the way with 13 kills to help push the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team to a three set (25-17, 25-16, 25-13) victory over Howard Thursday evening in NJCAA Region 20 action.
The Nighthawks improve to 2-0 this season and return to action Saturday in a tri-match against Monroe and Harford in Bel Air, Md., starting at 11 a.m.
NOVA was down early in the first set, but quickly closed the gap and took lead the for good on Mollie Simon's kill to give the Nighthawks a 5-4 advantage. Later in the opening stanza, Simon hammered down another kill to make it 14-9.
Howard was able to get within two (15-13), but the Nighthawks finished the set on a 10-4 run to grab the win.
To start the middle set the Nighthawks jumped on top 6-1 thanks in part to a pair of blocks by Simon and a kill by Deveis Wooten, who has 10 on the night. The Dragons, however, battled back brought the deficit down to two (13-11).
NOVA though would not allow Howard to get any closer and finished the set on a 12-5 swing. During the run Connatser led the way with four kills.
The Nighthawks again started off hot and led 5-0, as Rachel Scott gave NOVA two of the points on aces. After two quick tallies by Howard, the Nighthawks went on a 15-5 run, which kept the Dragons from getting any closer.
