BEL AIR, Md. – Mollie Simon had 19 combined kills Saturday, as the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team defeated Region 20 foe Harford in four sets (25-15, 20-25, 25-16, 25-15), but were downed by Monroe in straight sets (25-17, 25-11, 25-10).
The Nighthawks are 3-1 this season and travel to the Empire State for a five match four-day road trip.
Early in the opener, NOVA and Harford went back and forth until Simon hammered down three straight kills to swing the momentum. During the 13-4 run, the Nighthawks had nine kills to jump on top 20-11.
In the third set, NOVA led by one (12-11) after a Brittany Connatser kill, which started a 12-4 swing for the Nighthawks.
In the final set, the Nighthawks and Owls were tied at 11 until Deveis Wooten broke the tie and began a 14-4 match ending run.
The Nighthawks struggled offensively in the night cap against Monroe as the Mustangs hit .326 for match, NOVA hit. -.051. Connatser led NOVA with four kills and Hailey Villegas added a season-best 10 assists.
