NOVA splits first day of Monroe Invitational

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team swept Nassau in straight sets (25-11, 25-16, 25-9), but were bested for the second time in a week by host Monroe in three sets (25-16, 25-6, 25-14) Friday evening. 

Match One
The Nighthawks led 3-0 in the opening set, but Nassau battled back and took a 4-3 advantage. However, moments later Mollie Simon hammered down a kill to tie the match, and then the Tigers had three unforced errors, which swung the momentum back to NOVA.

In the first set, the Nighthawks led by as much as 14 (24-10) after a late Simon kill, which was one of her four on the day.

Over the final set stanzas, NOVA 14 team kills and the Tigers had 23 attack errors to allow the Nighthawks to cruise to victory.

Match Two
Ivanna Jorge
had a season-best seven kills to lead NOVA in the nightcap, but Monroe was too much. Simon, meanwhile, finished the evening with four kills, while Trinity Hensel added another kill for NOVA.

The Mustangs hit .213 for the match, while the Nighthawks struggled offensively and finished the contest hitting -.118. NOVA also had 22 attack errors, 14 reception miscues and six service mistakes. 

The Nighthawks return to the court Saturday to complete the Monroe Invitation against Central Florida and Saint Johns River.
