ANNANDALE – Behind a career-high 31 assists, Elena Swale helped lead the Northern Virginia Community College volleyball team to a straight set (25-21, 25-17, 25-23) victory over NJCAA Region 20 Division II foe Potomac State Thursday evening.
The Nighthawks, who improve to 7-5 in 2019 return to action Thursday, Sept. 26 at Anne Arundel.
Both teams played evenly in the first set, but four NOVA service aces were the difference. The Nighthawks, who led by as much as seven (18-11) had to hold on as PSC mounted a feverish comeback.
The Catamounts got within three late (24-21), but a Jacqueline Trosman kill ended the first stanza.
In the early goings of the second set it was a back and forth battle, but Alyssa Mielke hammered down a kill, which started 7-1 swing for the Nighthawks.
During the second set, NOVA hit an outstanding .750 and had 12 team kills in 16 attempts to go along with four assisted blocks.
In the final set, the Nighthawks trailed 17-10, but NOVA was able to rally following a Deveis Wooten kill. After Wooten's kill, NOVA outscored the Catamounts 15-6 the rest of the way and had six kills during the momentum shift.
Offensively for the Nighthawks, Mollie Simon had a team-best 11 kills, two aces and added three assisted blocks.
